Lake Bled is Slovenia's most visited site — and also the one where tourists get fleeced the most. Between the overrated castle, the crowded gondola and the overpriced restaurants, it's easy to leave disappointed and €200 lighter. Here's how to do Bled smartly, enjoying everything that's genuinely good.
What to Avoid
Bled Castle (€18 adult, €7 child): the view is lovely, but the museum inside is forgettable and the souvenir shop is straight out of the 80s. For the same view but better, climb to Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica (free). The gondola (pletna) to the island: €20 for the boat + €12 for church entry = €32 for 30 minutes on a tiny island, packed in with 20 other tourists. Unless ringing the church bell is on your bucket list, give it a miss.
The Walk Around the Lake: The Free Must-Do
A 6 km walk around the lake, 1.5 hours at an easy pace. The path is flat and accessible to everyone. The south-east stretch, with its 200 m wooden boardwalk above the water, is the most beautiful. Stop at Café Belvedere — designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, once Tito's meeting place with heads of state. Kremšnita at €10, cappuccino at €4, but the terrace overlooking the lake is worth every cent. Open from May to September only.
The Two Viewpoints Worth the Climb
Ojstrica (611 m): this is THE Bled postcard photo, the one with the island, the castle and the Alps. 130 m of climbing from the Velika Zaka car park, 20-25 minutes up. Follow the signs marked 6. Mala Osojnica (670 m): same start, but steeper and higher. 190 m of climbing — careful on wet ground. The view is even more spectacular, and there are far fewer people.
Swimming: The Real Luxury
The best swimming spot is Velika Zaka, near the rowing centre. The water is clear and mild (24°C in summer). Kids love diving off the wooden pontoons. It's free, well maintained, and far less crowded than the main beach on the castle side. Arrive early in summer — the car park fills up fast.
Kremšnita: Where to Eat It?
This double layer of vanilla cream and custard between two sheets of puff pastry is Bled's icon. Three addresses are worth the detour: the Grand Hotel Toplice (€9, lakeside terrace), the Šmon patisserie (a local favourite for 20 years), and Café Belvedere (mentioned above). Avoid the industrial versions sold in souvenir shops.
Alternative Activities
Stand-up paddleboard (€12-15/h) or rowing boat (€25-30/h) to explore the lake at your own pace. The Straža summer toboggan (€10 a ride) delights children. And above all, don't miss the Vintgar gorge 4 km away: a 1.6 km wooden walkway along a turquoise canyon. It's spectacular and much cheaper than the castle.
Practical Tips
Parking: €2-3/h in the official car parks; avoid the campsite (€15 flat rate). From Ljubljana: 50 minutes by motorway. Visit time: minimum 3 hours, a full day if you add the gorge. In August, come before 9am or after 5pm to avoid the crowds. To eat smart, shop at Mercator (supermarket): local cured meats and cheeses for a picnic at the water's edge.
